IRC Guide

CFUD's OOC chatroom (called a channel) is on the IRC network. From cast channels to one giant game channel that never sleeps, it serves as a very useful way to keep in contact with the game, and to partake in some fun chit-chat and get to know your fellow players.

If you're confused about how IRC works, we have a handy-dandy guide for you.

AN IRC PROGRAM
First thing's first. You need an IRC client. Here are some of them, from the default to other ones with more options. All are free to use.

- mIRC (need to click continue once or twice, but doesn't stop working)
- SysReset (same as above)
- Colloquy (Mac only)
- Mibbit
- ChatZilla
- Adium (Mac only)

The IRC channel is open to everybody: players, stalkers of the game or potential appers (just please refrain from telling anybody who you are apping!). The only rules we have in the channel is to respect each other, and to keep any political and secret/anoncomm talk out of the main channel (there are separate channels specifically for political chitchat).

CONNECTING
images used are from the mIRC client, but should work in a similar way for the other clients

STEP #1
Open the client. Click on the Tools menu, and then click on Options. If it's your first time using mIRC, the Options window will pop it automatically.

Enter the nick you wish to use (usually a character name). Alternative nick, Name and E-mail are all optional.

STEP #2
In the Options menu, click on the Connect dropdown. Click on Servers, and a bunch of defaults pop up. Lunarnet needs to be added manually. Click "Add" on the right.

STEP #3
An 'Add Server' window comes up. Fill it out with the following:
Description: Lunarnet (or whatever you want your specially named server to be)
IRC Server: irc.lunarnet.org
Port(s): 6667
Nothing else needs to be filled out.

STEP #4
A new server has appeared! Highlight your newly created server and click "Select" on the right.

STEP #5
Your server window should now look like this, with the server and your nick prepared. The lightning bolt-shaped button on the far left beneath "File" is the connect button. Click it!

STEP #6
Lots of stuff appears in the connect window, but all you need to worry about is the password for your nickm (registering nicknames and info on that below). If it's your first time using mIRC, a join channel window will appear. If not, then simply click Commands -> Join Channel from the top menu. Type in #campfuckudie (or whatever other channel you want to join), click "Join" on the right, and you're in!

NICKNAMES, CHANNELS AND HOW THEY WORK

REGISTERING YOUR NICKNAME:
The command to register your nickname is "/msg nickserv register PASSWORD". Once registered, you can kick anybody using your nickname off of the server, and are privy to things like registering a new channel, being a moderator (OP) of a channel, and other perks. It's always a good thing to register your name, especially if you don't want somebody else taking it!

LOGGING ONTO YOUR NICKNAME:
Once registered, you will be prompted for your password when you connect to the server. The command to log into your nickname is "/msg nickserv identify PASSWORD"

If somebody else is on your nickname and you wish to use it, you can boot them off of your nickname with the command "/msg nickserv ghost YOURNICKNAME YOURPASSWORD"

To change your password, use the command "/msg nickserv set password NEWPASSWORD"

LINKING YOUR NICKNAMES:
If you have more than one character and enjoy switching names a lot, there is a simple way to link your nicknames so anything linked to your main nickname automatically gets that nickname's perks and permissions (such as any OPs).

- DO NOT REGISTER THE SECOND NICK FIRST, it automatically registers when it links it to your main nickname.
- Make sure you are on your NEW, UNREGISTERED NICKNAME.
- Type "/msg nickserv link YOURMAINNICKNAME" and it will register, as well as gain all of that nick's permissions.

JOINING A CHANNEL:
Like explained above, the command "/join #CHANNELNAME" opens a new tab with that channel. Aside from the main channel of #campfuckudie - there are 'cast channels' for players who play from the same canons (and for those who might be watching their canon/might just like their canon even though they don't play from it). Feel free to ask if any exist, or if you have a cast or wish to begin your own channel, it's as simple as typing "/join #WHATEVERYOUWANTTHECHANNELNAMETOBE"

REGISTERING A CHANNEL:
Maybe you just made a shiny new cast channel or some other fun channel for players to hang out in. To register a channel (making you the OP of it), type in the command "/msg chanserv register #CHANNELNAME" Once a channel is registered, you can do the following:

- Double-clicking on the channel screen. - Lets you change the channel topic.
- "/msg chanserv flags #CHANNEL NICKNAME +O" - automatically OPs the nickname provided.
- "/msg chanserv flags #CHANNEL NICKNAME +H - automatically Half-OPs the nickname provided (Half-OPs have some of the perks OPs do, with some boundaries)

PMING SOMEONE:
It's really as simple as double clicking their name, a new tab pops up! Unless you want to do it the other way, which is "/msg NICKNAME hiiiiiiii"

EXTRA FUN STUFF

PINGS:
Pings are a way to catch somebody's attention if they are on IRC but AFK/in another window/whatever! They are basically specific words you can set - so when somebody types that word in the channel, your computer will make a noise you specify to get your attention. The most common ping in CFUD is set to character or canon names. Here's how to set up pings!

STEP #1
On the top menu, click Tools -> Address Book. A new window pops up; click on the "Highlight" tab in that window, and make sure "Enable highlight" is checked (unchecked means no pings), mIRC has it unchecked as default. Once done, click "Add" on the right.

STEP #2
Type whatever word you wish to ping you in the "Highlight lines that contain these words" box (the most common is your character's name, as that's how most get that player's attention).
Click "No Sound" under "Play Sound" once to change it from "No Sound" to "Beep". Click it a third time to use your own personal sound. You can click the little play button to hear your ping. Clicking that button a third time lets you add your own custom sound to use for a ping. Nothing else needs to be done here, so click "OK"

STEP #3
You now have a ping! Repeat the above with any other words or phrases you wish to be pinged by.

SHORTCUTS:
If you use mIRC or SysReset, you can set up an automatic password input and channeljoin upon connecting to the server so you don't have to do it manually every time.

Go to Tools -> Options -> Connect -> Options, and click on "Perform"

Make sure "Enable perform on connect" is checked, or else it doesn't automatically do everything. Clicking on "Add" lets you add the specific server to do these commands for (it would be lunarnet.org or whatever CFUD-type name you gave it as explained in the initial set up). Once added, you can choose it from the "Network" dropdown.

Under "Perform commands", you can add your password login and any channel joining you'd like to automatically do. For example, these are set so when I connect to lunarnet, it automatically puts in my password for me, and then opens the CFUD channel as well as the other channels I specified.
